Elmer Lonnie Mills Jr. 73, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on April 3, 2020 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was a lifelong resident of Jacksonville, born December 21, 1946. He served proudly as a U. S. Marine during the Vietnam War, which left him disabled. When he returned, he married the love of his life Wilma Mills and stood by her side for rest of his life. Wilma and he had two children, Lonnie and Darrin and were God parents to Nieces (Melissa and Tonya). Elmer, despite his many hardships and challenges, ensured his family was always taken care of and knew how much he loved them. Later, Lonnie married Sheila and Darrin married making Elmer a doting Grandfather (a.k.a. Papa) to Jeffrey (Kayla), Brittany, Destiny, Dalton, and Camryn and later Great Grandfather to Kristopher, Noah, Kasen and Kaden. In addition, he was lovingly known as Uncle Elmer to most any family or close friend that had the pleasure to know him. His love for humor and people was well known and he left an impression on all he met. He cared deeply for others and was always willing to help, be it with a helping hand, kind word, or a quick-witted joke. He is also survived by his Brothers (Julish & his wife Linda and Robert), Sister (Pauline & her husband Roland), Brother-in-Law (Marshall & his wife Joyce, and Eddie), Sister-in-Law (Carolyn) and numerous Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and extended family. He is preceded in death by his Father (Elmer Sr.), Mother (Irene), Brother (John), and three Sisters (Alline, Irene, and Hazelene) numerous in-laws and other extended family.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 15, 2020 at 12:00PM at Fraser Funeral Home with Pastor Larry McGinley officiating. The family will receive friends and family 1-hour prior. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.
