Andrew Ray Ross entered the presence of the Jesus he loved on the “good and better day” of December 31, 2020. Ray was born in Jacksonville, FL to Tom and Laurette Ross on June 3, 1929. He grew up in the Riverside area of Jacksonville along with his sister Tommie, served at Woodlawn Baptist Church and worked with the Boy Scout troop there, and graduated from Lee High School in 1947. However, it was at John Gorrie Junior High where Ray met his bride-to- be, Latrelle Adair.
Ray and Latrelle were married in 1948. Soon after, although Ray grew up working several jobs, he began a career with the City o f Jacksonville in the electric authority. His career was interrupted in 1952 when Ray entered the US Army. After serving in Korea, where he received service medals with stars, Ray resumed his career with the City, retiring in 1968. During that same year, Ray began a career in sales, selling insurance, shoes and then men’s clothing. He was a top salesman at Five Point’s Men’s Shop and Rosenblum’s. Also, during that year, Ray and his family moved their memberships to First Baptist Church Jacksonville, where he faithfully served the Lord as a deacon, jubilant Sunday School song leader, and godly witness.
Ray continued the bird and squirrel hunting, fishing and visiting Santa Fe Lake he began as a youngster, and in later years began really fishing, riding motorcycles, traveling, and enjoying his grandchildren and great grandchildren. All these things gave Ray opportunities to burst into songs of praise or celebrate with several scoops of ice cream.
His service to his Savior, his jobs and his other activities brought Ray into contact with many people that he genuinely cared for, and that cared for and loved him.
Ray is survived by his wife of 72 years, Latrelle, son David Ross, daughter Jan Hager (Freddie), six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and three nieces. David’s sons are Tyler, Caleb (Caitlin) and Adam (Kayla). Caleb has a son, Bradley. Jan’s children are Rebekah Turner (Daniel), Nathan (Jill) and Luke (Kelli). Rebekah has four children, Emma Grace, Levi, Hannah and Judson. Nathan has two sons, Patrick and Henry. Luke has three children, Samantha, Andrew and Madeline.
