Ross Douglas Dodd, Sr.

September 03, 1941~February 16, 2021

Ross Douglas Dodd Sr. may be remembered for many things, as a good friend, as a gun enthusiast, as a lover of old cars and motorcycles and as a man who probably had way too many hobbies and half-finished projects, or as he would say “there are too many irons in the fire”. But for those closest to him, he will be remembered as a man who served and loved his country, as a man who loved and cared deeply for his family and as a man that loved God and tried to set a good Christian example for his children and grandchildren. Ross passed from this life on February 16, 2021, at 5:40 AM, he was 79 years old. Ross Douglas Dodd was born September 3rd, 1941 to Lucy Mildred Johnson Dodd and Raymond William Dodd in Jacksonville Florida. He was the youngest of six children, 3 brothers, William Raymond, Robert Hugh, Frank James and 2 sisters, Mary and Patricia Ann. He married Paula Jean Flink on July 26, 1968. They moved to Melvin Road where they welcomed their daughter Deanna Michelle and eventually two sons Ross Douglas Jr and John Wesley. Grandchildren would eventually follow, Harlie Alexa, Sarah Bridgette, Ryleigh Hunter, Christian Alexander, Elijah Zane and Noah Wesley. He loved being a father and grandfather and took the care and wellbeing of his family seriously. Ross lived his whole life in Jacksonville, attending school and eventually joining the Navy Reserves serving six years. After the Navy, Ross worked as a mechanic and parts manager for Napa Auto Parts and General Motors before joining the Air National Guard July 26, 1975 as a vehicle Maintenance Superintendent eventually reaching the rank of Senior Master Sergeant when he retired on December 31, 1996. During his time with the Air National Guard he joined the Pistol and Rifle teams. He became the First Florida Guardsman to attain the Distinguished Shooters Badge in Rifle and the only Air National Guardsman in Florida and one of thirty-five in the US Air Force to attain the Double Distinguished Shooters Badge in Rifle and Pistol. He was a member of the Gateway Rifle Range and served as range officer for many years. He also mentored at local high schools for the ROTC programs on the proper use and safe handling of weapons. Ross was not only a family man, a military man, but he was also a Christian. Ross was led to the Lord by Carl Wells, a man who he considers his brother in Christ. He went on to serve the Lord through the bus ministry as a driver the for Sunday School program at Trinity Baptist Church for many years. He sent all his children to Trinity Christian Academy as he wanted them to have a Christian education and upbringing and even sent several of his grandchildren to Trinity as well. Toward the end of his days, he spoke often about God and read the Bible, he wanted everyone to hear the message of God’s love and he wanted everyone to know that it is never too late to accept Jesus Christ as their savior. Ross Douglas will be greatly missed by his many friends and family. Everyone who knew him will tell you he was a good man, honest, trustworthy and a man of his word. The very fact that he will be missed so much tells you a lot about a person and the impact they have had on someone’s life. We will miss you.
