Donald Earl Barnes

January 01, 1939~November 24, 2021

Donald Earl Barnes passed away peacefully on November 24, 2021, at the age of 82. He was born in Pleasant Grove, North Carolina and grew up in the surrounding area. His family moved to Florida and after high school he joined the Air Force, where his love of flying was born. He met Francine Roberts in Jacksonville, FL and they were married for 56 years.
He was an engineer and an entrepreneur who loved to create and build. His construction fingerprint was all over Jacksonville and he often recounted stories of his projects and the people with whom he worked. Long after the projects had ended, the friendships lived on.
Don and Francine loved to travel together and made trips all over the world. He looked forward to the planning of the trips almost as much as taking the trips. He would research locations years ahead of time to make sure that they experienced as much as possible.
After retiring, Don kept busy rebuilding tractors, Jeeps and a Model A Ford. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, especially when it involved motorized toys that he could drive or fly. He always took the time and opportunity to slow down to spend time with them.
Don was predeceased by his loving wife, Francine, his son, Donald J. Barnes (Tammy) and his son Scott Barnes. He is survived by his daughters, Kathy Messick (Chester) and Laura Hicks (Stephen) and grandchildren, Lauren, Lizzy, and Jesse.
Funeral Services will be held at Old Plank Baptist Church on Thursday, 12/2/21. Visitation at 10 a.m. and Funeral at 11:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest in Bell, FL beside his wife, Francine.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Don’s passing. He would never allow me to call him Mr. Barnes. He would often say, “My friends call me, Don”. I find peace in knowing that he is reunited with his wife. His presence will truly be missed. To his family members left behind I offer my deepest Condolences. I will keep you in prayer. Fly High Don!
