Carol Christine Smith, 72, peacefully passed away to her heavenly home on Monday, February 20, 2023 and her pain and suffering are no more.
As a wife, loving mother and amazing Mimi, Carol loved her family dearly. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Rev. David E. Smith, daughters, Christy Self (husband, Bryan), Laura Torbett (husband, Tim), Andrea Odell (husband, Jeremy)., and by the loves of her life, her grandchildren, Drew, Haylie and Addyson. Also, her sister, Nanci Gluff (nephew, David Gluff). Carol was preceded in death by her mother, Martha Vetack.
Carol was a Christmas baby, born December 25, 1950 in Chicago, IL and grew up in Indiana. Carol and Dave were serving on separate bus routes at Indianapolis Baptist Temple when they first met. They were married in 1975 and began their ministry in Ohio until moving to Jacksonville, FL in 1989 when Dave accepted a position to serve at Trinity Baptist Church. Carol served the Lord in the bus ministry, in Sunday School and AWANA for more than 20 years. Her passion was pouring her heart and love into children’s ministries.
Carol worked in the business office at Trinity Baptist College and then at FSCJ, until her retirement in 2016. She always went the extra mile helping the college students in many aspects of their lives. Carol genuinely cared for her students and co-workers and developed long-lasting relationships with them.
As an avid sports fan, Carol loved cheering on the Braves. She also loved football, basketball and of course, NASCAR. She enjoyed Elvis movies and listening to all kinds of music. Carol cherished her friends and considered them family. They enjoyed many trips to the mountains, playing cards and shared many meals together. Generosity abounded from her. Family and friends were often blessed by her generous giving, as she always extended an outstretched hand to others. Carol was greatly loved and will be greatly missed!
Her Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, February 23, 2023, at Trinity Baptist Church, 800 Hammond Blvd, Jacksonville, FL with visitation at 10AM and services at 11AM, followed immediately by the committal service at Gethsemane Gardens. Carol was one of the nicest people I have ever known. She would do anything to help someone. I worked with her at Kent Campus in the 80’s or early 90’s when she helped with registration input. I can still remember how crafty she was. She gave everyone wire hangers that were crocheted all around so they worked better for hanging garments. I probably had my hangers from her for 20 years! She was a very special lady and will be greatly missed. Janene Eberle

Carol was one of sweetest and funniest people I have ever known. Yes her children and grandchildren were so precious to her in her life. We took Sunday school outings together. And boy did we have fun. Always making people laugh. We share the same birthday. So when we did go out and celebrate, it was a fantastic celebration.our S.S class was always doing different Little skits. one of them she was motorcycle mama. She was the best. She had everyone laughing till their ribs hurt. Oh I will miss her. She is with Jesus. All of her friends who has gone before her are giving her a big welcome home. I love you my birthday buddy!!!❤️😂

I remember each time I would go over to Christy’s as a teenager, Carol C would always want to know about our lives and engage with us. She always had a smile on her face and a sweet spirit. She will be missed, much love and prayers to the family.

We both worked at FSCJ for many years; same office but different locations. All who knew her loved her. We always called each other cousin (same last name) and at one time or another were linked to Trinity. She was a gift from Heaven and will be greatly missed. My condolences go out to all.
