Gary Edward Markel
October 28, 1960 – June 4, 2023

Gary Edward Markel, 62, of Jacksonville, FL, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 4, 2023 with his wife by his side. Gary was born on October 28, 1960 in Bay City, Michigan to Gerald and Beverly Markel. He grew up in a large family with three brothers; Greg, Gordon (Joan), and Glen as well as three sisters; Geri Ann (Paul), Grace (James), and Gretchen (Kevin). Gary was a beloved husband to Robin Markel, a devoted father to Chris (Annie), Jessica, and Ray as well as a grandfather to Donna. He is preceded in death by his father Gerald Markel.

Gary worked for R&L Carriers as a truck driver for 26 ½ years. He made many friends along the way who often referred to him by his handle “Backbone.” Gary was a very loving and caring man who had a special place in his heart for all of his nieces and nephews and had the nickname of “Uncle G-Dawg,” but the nickname “Papa” he received from Ray and Donna was by far his proudest. He always put his family first and had a great sense of humor throughout life; some would even say he was a goofball. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Gary also served our country as a member of the armed forces in the United States Army for 5 years and received an honorable discharge.

Services for Gary will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023 at Fraser Funeral Home, located at 8168 Normandy Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32221. The viewing will be at 11 AM followed by the funeral services at 12 PM.

My heart is shattered and I’m in complete shock right now, but I know you are up there in Heaven and are at peace. You were more than an Uncle to me, you were like having a 2nd Father. You always treated and loved us like we were your own and you weren’t afraid to tell us like it is. Some of my greatest memories will always be with you, you’ll always be in my heart. I love you so much and promise to take care of Aunt Robin and Ray. Love, Missy (Minnie)
