James Leroy Manuel

April 30, 1944~August 24, 2021

James L. ‘Jim” Manuel, 77, of Jacksonville, FL passed away on Tuesday, August 24, 2021. Jim was born to Howard & Peggy (Woods) Manuel on April 30, 1944, in Bristol, TN. He graduated from Bristol Tennessee High School in July of 1965. After completing his high school education, Jim enlisted in the US Navy in April of 1966 and served his country with honor, pride, and dignity for almost 22 years. He also worked part-time at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Coliseum with the events crew and in the box office for many years. After being honorably discharged, Jim became a proud truck driver for Pat Salmon & Sons, now known as 10 Roads Express, where he was employed for over 33 years. He was also a member of the Teamsters Local Union No. 512. Jim loved his new career and took pride in his job, arriving to work two hours early just to clean his truck, shine his wheels and socialize with everyone at the yard. When the guys would poke fun at him about it, he’d simply say with a smile, “Hey, I like my truck to look good going down the road!” He enjoyed the back and forth banter and truly treasured the great friendships he made while with the company. In fact, he viewed them as an extension of his family.

In his spare time, Jim enjoyed spending every moment he could with family and friends. Going to the movies, watching football games, and shopping for not only himself but for others, as well, were his weekly rituals. He always had to pick up something for someone no matter where he went. He was a selfless man that gave to all and would bend over backward to help anyone, never expecting anything in return. A genuine, caring, kind and giving soul we were fortunate enough to have in our lives. He was a loving and devoted father, papa, and friend whose cheerful attitude and bright smile will be missed, dearly.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and grandchild James Byron Manuel, Jr., affectionately known as “Baby Jamie.’ He is survived by his brothers, Frankie (Joann) Manuel and Randy and Eddie Harris, his children Michael (Arianna) Manuel, Shannon Andrews, and James B. “Jamie” Manuel, grandchildren Briauna Smith, Spencer (Sterling) Manuel, Walker, Mariah, Austin, Jaxon, and Memphis Manuel, many nieces, and nephews, a long-time special friend and confidant Marli Albright and a host of many more treasured family and friends.
